NCM to visit Kandhamal tomorrow, to verify rehabilitation

Bhubaneswar, Sept 14 (PTI) Asking the Orissa government to take steps for setting up a State Minority Commission, the National Commission for Minorities today said it would review the condition of riot victims in the communally fragile Kandhamal district.

''We will visit Kandhamal tomorrow to verify complaints regarding rehabilitation of victims of the 2008 communal riot,'' NCM's vice-chairman H T Sangliana told reporters after meeting members of different minority community leaders here.

Sangliana said the NCM had received complaints that a large number of riot victims had not yet returned to their villages two years after the violence rocked Kandhamal district.

He said he was told that a section of victims had taken shelter in forests even today. ''We will verify all allegations and complaints during the visit,'' Sangliana said adding he was optimistic about complete restoration of peace in Kandhamal.

Though the state government had taken some steps for rehabilitation of riot victims, Cuttack-Bhubaneswar archbishop Rapheal Cheenath told the NCM that the administration needed to be 'pro-active' in ensuing that all people lived peacefully in their respective villages.

Demading immediate setting up of the State Minority Commission, the All Orissa Minority Forum drew attention of the NCM for making provision of five per cent seat reservation for minority students in all educational instituions in the state.
