Sangliana interfered in police work: Panel

Feb. 1: The Somasekhara Commission of Inquiry, constituted to look into the series of church attacks in the state in 2008, has implicated former BJP MP H.T. Sangliana for “interfering” in the functioning of the police during the attacks on two city churches in Sept. 2008.

The Commission, which issued a clarification stating that there was no “lapse on its part either in law or in presenting facts” on the attacks, cautioned that anyone who brought disrepute to the Commission, would be punishable under Section 10A(1) of the Commission of Inquiry Act, with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or fine, or both.

In its findings, the Commission said that when Saint James Church in Mariyannapalya in the city was attacked, Mr Sangliana had interfered in the functioning of Amrithahalli police.

“Mr. Sangliana, a former city police chief turned politician, presently claiming to be a leader of Christians, interfered in the affairs of the Amrithahalli police whenever local Hindus complained they were being victimised for the attacks — but without success. Politicisation of the incident of attack by self-styled leaders is clearly indicated in the area and it should be totally avoided.”

The report also suggests that the former cop interfered in the operations of Rajarajeswarinagar police.
